The Bluetooth adapter adds wireless connectivity to a computer that does not have built-in Bluetooth – most often a desktop computer. With it, you can connect wireless headphones, a controller, a keyboard, a mouse, or a speaker. Here you can find small USB adapters, audio receivers, and car models.
How to choose
- The version of Bluetooth. Version 5.0 and newer provide a more stable connection, greater range, and lower battery consumption for connected devices. Older versions 4.0 and 4.1 are sufficient for a mouse and keyboard but are weaker for headphones.
- The type. The USB adapter adds Bluetooth to the computer. The Bluetooth receiver is the opposite – it receives sound from the phone and sends it to an old stereo, speakers, or the audio system in the car.
- The size. Nano adapters hardly protrude from the port and can stay permanently in a laptop. Larger models with antennas have better range.
- The purpose. If you will only connect a mouse and keyboard, the simplest adapter is sufficient. For wireless headphones and game controllers, choose a newer version and model from a reputable brand.
- The range. Regular adapters reach about ten meters in a room. If the computer is under the desk, an extension USB cable helps the adapter be closer to the devices.
What to watch out for
- An adapter with a newer version does not improve sound if the headphones support an older version – the connection works at the oldest of the two.
- The metal case of the computer and USB 3.0 ports near the adapter can interfere with the signal – use a front port or an extender.
- If the computer already has built-in Bluetooth, turn it off before using the adapter.
- Check if the adapter requires a driver for older versions of Windows.
- For sound in the car, check if the audio system has an AUX input or USB.
- One adapter can connect several devices simultaneously, but with many headphones and controllers, the connection may become less stable.
Compatibility
Most modern adapters work with Windows 10 and 11 immediately upon connection, and for older systems, the driver is on the manufacturer's website. With Linux, support depends on the chip. If you are also looking for a faster wireless network, check out WiFi adapters – many of them have built-in Bluetooth. Suitable devices for connection can be found at headphones and speakers.
