Some games just play better with a controller – sports titles, platformers, action games, and racing. Here you will find gamepads for computers and consoles, wheels with pedals and gear shifters for simulators, as well as joysticks for flight simulators. There are models for beginners and for those building a serious simulator cockpit.
How to choose
- The platform. The original controllers for PlayStation and Xbox work best with their console, but they also connect to a computer. Many accessory brands make models for multiple platforms – check compatibility.
- The connection. Wired gamepads do not need charging and have no latency. Wireless ones use Bluetooth or a receiver and provide freedom in front of the TV.
- The wheel. Cheaper wheels have vibrations and spring return. Models with force feedback and direct drive convey the feeling of the road and are for serious simulators.
- The pedals and shifters. Pedals with a separate clutch and gear shifter add realism. Some systems can be upgraded with separate modules.
- The joysticks. For flight simulators, there are systems with separate stick and throttle, with many buttons for control.
- The programmable buttons. The rear buttons and interchangeable sticks give an advantage in racing games because you don’t let go of the right stick to jump or reload.
What to watch out for
- Sticks with Hall Effect sensors do not wear out and do not start to “drift” over time.
- Powerful wheels need a stable stand or desk to be securely mounted.
- Wireless controllers with batteries last long, while those with built-in batteries charge via USB.
- Check if the game supports a wheel or joystick before buying.
- Check if there is a cable for the computer included – some controllers are sold without it.
Compatibility
For computers, most games support Xbox controllers without additional drivers, while other models work through Steam or the manufacturer's software. Wheels and pedals for consoles often work with computers, but not always the other way around. If you are looking for a console, check out PlayStation and Xbox consoles or portable consoles. For long sessions with a wheel, a comfortable gaming chair that stays stable and does not slide back when pressing the pedals helps.
