Wireless headphones have become the primary way to listen to music, podcasts, and have conversations on the go. In this category, there are Bluetooth in-ear headphones, over-ear headphones, behind-the-ear models for sports, and hands-free with one earpiece for drivers, from JBL, Jabra, Skullcandy, HAMA, Creative, HyperX, and other brands.
How to choose
- The shape. In-ear buds are the smallest and most convenient for everyday wear. Over-ear or around-ear headphones provide richer sound and longer battery life. Behind-the-ear models stay stable while running and training.
- Noise cancellation. Active noise cancellation (ANC) drowns out noise in public transport, airplanes, and offices. The transparency mode lets in surrounding sounds when you need to hear what's going on around you.
- The microphones. For many conversations, look for models with multiple microphones and noise suppression during speaking. Single-ear hands-free are designed specifically for conversations and driving.
- The battery. In-ear buds last for several hours, and the case charges them several more times. Over-ear headphones usually last for dozens of hours on a single charge.
- Water and sweat protection. For sports and walks in the rain, look for an IPX protection rating.
What to watch out for
- The size of the tips affects the sound – try all the ones in the package until the buds fit snugly.
- Connecting to two phones simultaneously (multipoint) is convenient if you have a work and a personal phone.
- The AAC and aptX codecs provide better quality if the phone supports them.
- If you will be listening very loudly and for a long time, take breaks – this protects your hearing in the long term.
- Gaming wireless earbuds have a mode with less audio delay for games and videos.
Compatibility
Bluetooth headphones work with phones, tablets, laptops, and smartwatches, regardless of brand. Most models connect quickly to the phone upon first opening the case and remember several devices. Some features, such as sound settings and updates, require the manufacturer's app. For a long day outdoors, an external battery will help, and for charging at home – a compact USB-C charger. If you are looking for a speaker for shared listening, check out portable speakers.
