IP cameras allow you to see your home, office, or yard from your phone, wherever you are. Here you will find Wi-Fi cameras for indoor installation, rotating models that cover an entire room, outdoor cameras with night vision, video doorbells, and cameras with PoE for professional video surveillance systems.
How to choose
- The installation location. Indoor cameras are small and easy to place on a shelf. Outdoor cameras have protection from rain and dust and withstand cold and heat.
- The resolution. 1080p is sufficient for a room and a nursery. 2K and 4 megapixels provide more detail – useful when you want to distinguish faces or license plates.
- The rotation. Cameras with controllable movement rotate horizontally and vertically and cover the entire room. Fixed cameras are directed at one area, such as the entrance.
- Night vision. Infrared LEDs provide a black-and-white image in complete darkness. Some models also have white light for color images at night.
- The connection. Wi-Fi cameras are the easiest to install. PoE cameras receive both power and data over one network cable – a more stable solution for outdoor installation.
What to watch out for
- Motion detection sends a notification to your phone, and some models distinguish between people, animals, and cars.
- Two-way audio allows you to speak through the camera – convenient for children, pets, and couriers.
- Recording can be on a microSD card, on a recorder, or in the cloud – the cloud usually requires a subscription.
- The video doorbell shows who is at the door and allows you to talk to them from your phone, even when you are not at home.
- The manufacturer's app should be user-friendly – that’s where you will view the image and recordings every day.
- Do not point cameras at private properties and public places – comply with the data protection law.
Connection and recording
Most home cameras are set up through a mobile app and operate on 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi. Check the signal at the installation location – if it is weak, a access point helps. If you have several cameras from the same brand, you usually view them all in one app. For several wired cameras, use a PoE switch that powers them centrally. For local recording, add a suitable memory card with high durability.
