Useful when choosing
The separate microphone provides a much clearer and cleaner voice than the built-in one in the laptop or camera – for streaming, podcasts, online meetings, and video recording. Here you can find desktop USB microphones, wireless systems for shooting with a phone or camera, reverb microphones, and professional models with XLR.
How to choose
- Type. Condenser microphones capture details and are suitable for quiet rooms, voice, and podcasts. Dynamic microphones withstand loud sounds and capture less background noise – they are good for noisy environments.
- Directionality. Cardioid microphones primarily capture sound from the front and suppress surrounding noise – the best choice for a single speaker. Omnidirectional microphones capture from all directions and are for table conversations with multiple people.
- Connection. USB microphones connect directly to the computer. XLR microphones require an audio interface or mixer but offer more options. Wireless systems and microphones with a 3.5 mm jack are convenient for phones and cameras.
- Purpose. Desktop models are for desks and streaming. Small reverb microphones and wireless systems with transmitters are for video, interviews, and outdoor shooting.
What to watch out for
- A stand with an arm and anti-vibration suspension reduces noise from bumps on the desk.
- A pop filter or foam in front of the microphone softens loud sounds when speaking.
- The mute button and headphone output are convenient during streaming and meetings.
- A condenser microphone in a noisy room picks up everything – in that case, a dynamic one is the better choice.
- Check if the package includes a cable for your port – USB-A, USB-C, or Lightning.
- Wireless systems have a built-in battery – check how many hours they last if you are shooting for a long time.
Compatibility
USB microphones work with Windows and macOS without drivers, and many models also connect to phones and tablets. Wireless systems often come with receivers for USB-C, Lightning, and 3.5 mm, so check which one you need. XLR microphones require an audio interface, and some condenser ones also need phantom power. If you are streaming, broadcasting software allows you to add noise filters and voice leveling. Combine the microphone with a webcam for meetings and closed headphones to prevent sound from returning to the recording.
