RAM memory determines how many programs, browser tabs, and games the computer can keep open without lag. When the memory runs out, the system starts using the disk, and everything noticeably slows down. Here you will find DDR5 and DDR4 memory for desktop computers, SODIMM modules for laptops, as well as high-frequency enthusiast kits with RGB lighting.
How to choose
- The type of memory. It depends entirely on the motherboard – DDR5 for the new AM5 and LGA 1851 platforms, DDR4 for older systems. Laptops use the shorter SODIMM modules.
- The capacity. 16 GB is enough for office work and light gaming. 32 GB is a reasonable choice for modern gaming and streaming. 64 GB and more are for video editing, 3D, virtual machines, and local AI models.
- Two modules instead of one. A kit of two modules works in dual-channel mode and is noticeably faster than a single module of the same capacity.
- Frequency and latency. For DDR5, a reasonable point is around 6000 MHz with low latency (CL), and for DDR4 – 3200–3600 MHz. Higher frequency helps most with processors that have integrated graphics and in gaming.
- XMP and EXPO profiles. They allow the memory to run at the advertised frequency with a single toggle in the BIOS.
What to watch out for
- DDR4 and DDR5 do not fit in the same slot – check what the board supports.
- Without an enabled XMP or EXPO profile, the memory runs at a lower base frequency.
- Tall modules with heatsinks may interfere with large air coolers.
- CUDIMM modules require a platform that supports them.
- Four DDR5 modules often run at a lower frequency than two – for large capacity, choose two larger modules.
Compatibility
Check the specification of the motherboard for the type of memory, maximum capacity, and supported frequencies. When upgrading, it is safest to add the same model or replace the entire kit. Server memory with ECC works only on platforms that support it, and for laptops, look for SODIMM and its standard. If you are unsure what to get, the configurator shows only the memory compatible with the selected board.
