Useful when choosing
Server disks must withstand constant writing and reading around the clock, without losing speed and without risking data during power outages. They determine how quickly databases, virtual machines, and shared folders respond. Here are server SSDs from Samsung and Micron in M.2, 2.5-inch, and U.2 formats with NVMe interface, designed for databases, virtualization, and fast storage.
How to choose
- Form factor. M.2 disks are compact and suitable for a system disk. U.2 and 2.5-inch NVMe disks are installed in front slots of the chassis and can be swapped on the fly.
- Interface. NVMe over PCI Express 4.0 and 5.0 provides multiple times higher speed than SATA and SAS. Check what the motherboard, controller, and chassis slots support.
- Durability. Server disks have specified endurance as the number of full writes per day (DWPD) or total write volume. For databases and caching, choose higher endurance, while for reading data, lower is sufficient.
- Power loss protection. Server SSDs have capacitors that complete the write during sudden power loss and protect the data.
- Capacity. Large disks with capacities from several to dozens of terabytes store more data in fewer slots, saving space and energy.
What to watch out for
- Use RAID or replication – even the most reliable disk can fail.
- RAID does not replace backups elsewhere.
- Fast NVMe disks heat up – ensure airflow through the slots.
- Some branded servers only accept disks from their own list.
- Update the firmware of the disks according to the manufacturer's instructions.
- Monitor the status of the disks via SMART and the management system to replace a worn-out disk in time.
Compatibility and consultation
Disks connect to the motherboard or to a controller and are placed in the slots of the chassis. For quick network access, also check server network cards. If you are looking for a specific capacity or format, contact us – the availability of server disks is confirmed upon request.
