The server power supply must operate 24/7, for years on end and without interruption, because any stoppage means inaccessible services and risk to data. Therefore, server power supplies are different from desktop ones – they are often hot-swappable, work in pairs for redundancy, and have high efficiency to consume less power and generate less heat. Here, power modules for servers and chassis are collected.
How to choose
- Compatibility with the server. Server power supplies are almost always for a specific brand, series, and chassis. The form factor, connector, and firmware must match – check the server model before choosing.
- Power. Sum the consumption of the processors, memory, disks, network and video cards, and add a margin. For compute video cards, the power requirement increases significantly.
- Redundancy. With two power supplies in redundant mode, the server continues to operate if one fails. Each must be able to handle the entire load on its own.
- Efficiency. 80 PLUS Platinum and Titanium certifications mean less energy loss. With continuous operation, the difference in the electricity bill accumulates.
- Hot-swapping. Hot-swappable modules allow for the replacement of a faulty power supply without stopping the server.
What to watch out for
- Connect the two power supplies to different sources or different UPS devices to have true redundancy.
- Do not mix power supplies with different power ratings in one server unless the manufacturer allows it.
- Monitor the alerts in the management system – they indicate a fault before it becomes a problem.
- Server power supplies are noisier than desktop ones due to small high-speed fans.
- Keep a backup power supply for critical servers – this way, the replacement takes minutes, not days.
- Check the input voltage and type of power cable, especially for high-power modules.
Compatibility and consultation
The power supply must be compatible with the chassis or server in which it will operate. To protect against power interruptions, add a UPS. If you are looking for a power supply for a specific server model, contact us with the model and serial number – we will check compatible modules and possible delivery.
