Virtual reality puts you inside the game – you see the world around you and control it with the movements of your hands and body. Here you will find standalone VR headsets that work without a computer, PlayStation kits, and models that connect to a computer for heavier games and simulators.
How to choose
- Standalone or connected. Standalone headsets have their own processor and work wirelessly. Most of them can also connect to a computer for heavier games. Console headsets only work with that console.
- The display. Higher resolution and OLED or LCD panels of good quality reduce the “screen door” effect in front of your eyes. A higher refresh rate makes the image smoother and reduces motion sickness.
- The memory. In standalone headsets, the internal memory determines how many games and apps you will install. Games take up a lot of space, so larger memory is more convenient.
- Controllers and tracking. Modern headsets track movement without external sensors. Some models also track hands without controllers.
- Comfort. The weight and its distribution, the head strap, and the soft interface against the face determine how long you will play comfortably. Some models have a battery at the back that balances the weight.
What to watch out for
- For gaming on a computer, you need a powerful graphics card – check the recommended requirements.
- If you wear glasses, check if they fit under the VR headset or if there are diopter inserts.
- Clear space in the room – for room-scale gaming, you need a free area without furniture.
- Start with short sessions if you are not used to it – some people feel slight dizziness at first.
- Keep the lenses away from direct sunlight – it can damage them in seconds.
Compatibility
Standalone VR headsets work with a phone for initial setup and have their own game store. For games from the computer, you need a computer with a sufficiently powerful graphics card, connected via cable or wirelessly through a good Wi-Fi network. VR kits for PlayStation only work with that specific console. If you want to build a computer for VR, the configurator will help you with the parts. VR headsets are also suitable for fitness games, watching videos, and virtual meetings, not just for classic games.
