This time we will tell you how the idea for our ROG Custom Water configuration was born.
It all started with the new case from Asus - ROG Z11. After its announcement, we were left with the impression that it is a specific case. We had our reservations about it and really wanted to see it in person. As soon as it arrived, we examined it thoroughly and were mainly impressed by the quality of the materials it is made of. This is definitely a case for connoisseurs! After removing its cover, ideas started pouring in.
It quickly became clear that we would assemble a serious machine with it. Despite its seemingly large size, as you may know, it is mini ITX format. Accordingly, the first consideration was the motherboard. At that moment, we had a unit of ASUS ROG STRIX X570-I GAMING, which fit perfectly.
We already had two components from the same manufacturer and asked ourselves, "Why not make this build entirely ROG?"
There was no need to worry about the platform and the processor, as our motherboard has an X570 chipset. The decision was easy - Ryzen 9 5900X. We wanted to install a 240mm AIO cooler, again from ASUS, so we decided to contact them directly. We presented them with the idea of creating a branded build, and our request was to supply us with a graphics card. They really liked the concept and responded immediately. They provided us with ASUS EKWB GeForce RTX 3090, which comes with a factory-installed water block from EKWB respectively. It didn't take long to realize that the entire computer would be with custom water cooling.
The Asus team initiated the process of sending the card and also helped with the delivery of the power supply - ROG STRIX 850W 80+ GOLD. While we were waiting for the two components to arrive, we rolled up our sleeves and started planning how we would do the cooling itself. We reviewed numerous options and came across the distro block from Bykski - RGV-AS-Z11-P, which we really liked and used subsequently.
Unlike conventional water pumps and reservoirs, distro blocks are made specifically for certain cases, and we knew that the final result, using the parts we selected, would be exactly as it should be. Here we encountered the first serious problem - Bykski components are hard to find in Europe. After a certain amount of time spent searching, it became clear that we would have to place an order from China. We assessed that the machine would look very good if all the other parts for the water cooling were Bykski. We ordered everything selected - water blocks, red fittings, etc. By selecting these components, the vision for the ROG machine became clearer. It had to be red and black, so we also added Red/Black sleeved cables from CableMod, and the final touch was the display that fit perfectly in the case.
The components started arriving one by one, and it was time for the actual assembly.
Unlike the Green Hornet build, where there was plenty of space to work, here things were quite different. We mounted the main components, checking everything multiple times, as in a mini ITX case, a sequence must be followed for everything to physically fit in its place. It was like assembling a puzzle.
Each tube had to be measured, cut, and bent extremely precisely to avoid changes and double work around the installation. For convenience, we also added a valve for the water cooling, which is extremely helpful when it comes to maintenance and system servicing.
As usual, the challenge was mainly the small and short tubes, especially those with S-shaped bends. The most difficult was the installation of the second radiator, as per specifications, the case itself is designed for only one. We knew it would be almost impossible to mount it, but at the same time, we realized that just a 240mm, and that a thin radiator, would not be enough to cool the multi-core processor. And let's not forget that RTX 3090 is quite hot. For the successful installation of the second radiator, we had to use 90-degree cables for the graphics card due to its specific placement and lack of access to them.
Finally, before we fill the machine with the red EK CRYOFUEL SCARLET RED liquid, we tested with compressed air. This is a mandatory process that we at PCBUILD perform on absolutely every assembled machine with water cooling. We found that the most difficult tube of all, namely the one between the CPU block and the graphics card, was not well sealed. Due to the unusual 11-degree tilt of the motherboard (patented by Asus), it was particularly challenging to fit. This necessitated the installation of additional fittings, which ultimately not only solved the problem but also contributed to the final look of the build.
It was time to fill, during which we also had concerns - the extremely tight space and the awkward position of the distro block cap worried us, but of course, we managed that as well.
After the entire build, filling, and finishing of this unique piece, pressing the start button revealed ROG in all its glory and we were extremely pleased with the result!
