What are XMP profiles for RAM memory and how to use them?
XMP profiles automatically set your memory to a higher frequency. Should you use them, though?
Let’s start with what the abbreviation XMP? means. Behind the three-letter acronym stands the term Extreme Memory Profile, or in other words - Extreme Memory Profile. This is a technology from Intel that allows simultaneous changes to multiple settings of RAM memory. If you have ever wanted to overclock your RAM but lack the necessary knowledge to do it manually, then this is the approach for you.

How does it work exactly?
Upon startup, your computer always performs a short self-diagnosis. Part of this process includes automatically configuring the hardware, including the installed memory. Your configuration needs to “know” the exact model of the RAM sticks, their timings, and frequencies to set. Your BIOS will detect these values from a small chip on your RAM, called SPD (serial presence detect). XMP can be seen as an “extension” to SPD, providing higher frequencies and/or “tighter” timings for your sticks to operate. Among other things, it makes adjustments to the additional voltage needed for a stable overclock, which can be executed with just one click of the mouse.
XMP profiles practically allow RAM memories to operate correctly in your system, even beyond the industrial specifications of JEDEC.

Selecting such a profile is done from the BIOS of your motherboard, after which it takes effect upon saving the settings and restarting the machine. With different manufacturers, it may be located in slightly different positions and names. For this reason, it is advisable to check the manual of your motherboard before changing any settings!
Most memories have two pre-stored profiles to choose from. One is usually the one that activates the frequency and timings specified on the packaging (or in the manual), while the other may be optimized for other settings.
Keep in mind that until you activate XMP, it is completely normal to see a lower speed than advertised, as, as mentioned above, DDR industrial standards vary, and XMP is actually an overclocking profile that is cleverly used by RAM stick manufacturers for advertising.

It is also very important to pay attention to the list of compatible memories for your motherboard. You can usually find it on the manufacturer's website. The models listed there guarantee full compatibility, as they have been tested by the company. If your sticks are not among the listed ones, it does not mean they will not work on your motherboard, but simply that they have not been specifically tested. However, it should be accepted that there is a possibility that non-certified memory may not work stably or may not be able to activate its XMP profiles!
