Drivers are extremely important for the use of graphics cards. Often, the correct driver can be the difference between optimal performance and problems. Therefore, it is important that they are updated regularly. But what exactly is the difference between the various types of drivers?
Each company has a different schedule for releasing its drivers, with a version potentially adding or removing features, depending on what the manufacturer wants to improve. It is generally recommended to use the so-called WHQL or Game Ready/Game On drivers, which are usually the most stable and carry current optimizations for the latest games. But what exactly does WHQL mean?
What is a WHQL driver?
The WHQL abbreviation stands for "Windows Hardware Quality Labs", a special certification program created by Microsoft. The purpose of the WHQL certificate is to ensure that drivers meet specific quality and compatibility standards with Windows-based operating systems.
WHQL certified drivers undergo a series of detailed tests to confirm their compatibility, stability, and reliability when used with different versions of Windows. Microsoft examines how the specific version interacts with the operating system, checks for potential crashes, and tests overall performance. Once it passes all procedures, the driver receives a WHQL certificate.

What is a Game Ready or Game On driver?

Such drivers are released alongside major game releases, DLC, or updates. For this reason, it is not uncommon to see two or more drivers with optimizations for the same game. In other words, these drivers are optimized for use by a specific group of people who do not require frequent updates like the "GRD" versions. It is important to note that "SD" can also be used for gaming normally, but some optimizations for specific games may be missing.
What are Radeon Pro and ARC Pro drivers?
These drivers are designed to work only with workstation cards. They are not optimized for gaming, although they should still work in games, depending on the capabilities of the specific video cards. Such drivers are released much less frequently (every few months or even quarters) and usually offer optimizations for specific workstation applications.
How to download the latest drivers and keep them always updated?
Each company offers its software that can check for the availability of new versions. Currently, these are AMD Adrenalin Software, Nvidia GeForce Experience, and Intel Arc Control.
