NVIDIA RTX 5090 Founder’s Edition will include 16 modules of GDDR7 memory in a denser design

The memory layout for the upcoming graphics card RTX 5090 will differ from that of RTX 4090. The new flagship GPU, featuring the Blackwell GB202 GPU, is expected to have a 512-bit memory bus. This will likely increase the memory capacity, which will require more modules around the GPU. 

RTX 5090 is expected to support GDDR7 memory, arranged in a denser configuration than the current RTX 4090. The layout will change from 3-4-1-4 to 4-5-2-5 (clockwise), allowing the board to support up to 16 memory modules. However, this does not mean that all modules need to be used, nor does it confirm their capacities. Nevertheless, if RTX 5090 uses the same 2GB modules, it could potentially offer up to 32GB of memory.

Rumors further claim that the design will include three PCB boards. It is not clear exactly what the source means by this, but it is worth noting that NVIDIA has previously experimented with non-standard PCB designs, such as for the unreleased RTX TITAN ADA GPU. In this case, the PCB board was supposed to be positioned parallel to the PCI slot, suggesting that the PCIe interface would be on a separate PCB board.

Although the actual board was never shown, the prototype cooler designed for this layout was extensively leaked. The leaks suggest that a four-slot, triple fan cooler will be positioned on this configuration of PCB boards.

It is expected that NVIDIA will unveil its RTX 50 series this year, most likely in the fourth quarter of 2024.
