Micron begins trial production of its first GDDR7 chips for industrial partners after JEDEC announced the final specifications of the GDDR7 memory standard. Micron's new memory solution, based on 1β (1-beta) DRAM technology, offers 32 Gb/s in an “energy-optimized” design, providing significantly better performance and energy efficiency.
More bandwidth
Micron's GDDR7 chips can deliver over 1.5 TB/s system bandwidth, which is up to 60 percent more than that of GDDR6. This significant improvement will allow future generations of graphics processors to provide faster response times and smoother gameplay.
More ray tracing
GDDR7 will provide over a 30 percent improvement in frames and performance in both ray tracing and rasterization, making games more realistic and visually stunning.
More FPS
With four independent channels for optimized loads, GDDR7 chips will allow significant improvements in gaming by providing higher frames per second and faster processing.
More of everything
GDDR7 includes more than a 50 percent improvement in energy efficiency compared to GDDR6, making it extremely attractive for both PC gamers and laptop enthusiasts. The new “sleep mode” can reduce power consumption in standby mode by up to 70 percent. Additionally, GDDR7 is expected to enhance machine learning and AI technologies by increasing bandwidth by up to 33 percent and reducing response times by up to 20 percent in generative AI workloads.
Technology partners
High-profile technology partners working with Micron's first GDDR7 chips include AMD and Cadence Design Systems. AMD is expected to use the new memory solution for its future gaming graphics processors, while Cadence is using Micron's samples for testing and validation of GDDR7 PHY IP operating at 36 Gb/s.
