Useful when choosing
The card reader is the fastest way to transfer photos and videos from a camera, drone, or action camera to your computer. Here you will find external USB readers for SD and microSD, multi-format models for CompactFlash and other cards, built-in readers for the computer case, as well as readers for SIM and smart cards.
How to choose
- Types of cards. Check what cards you use – SD, microSD, CompactFlash, or older formats. Multi-format readers cover almost everything, while small models are only for SD and microSD.
- The interface. USB 2.0 is sufficient for small files, but for RAW photos and 4K videos, choose a USB 3.0 or faster reader. If your laptop only has USB-C, get a reader with a USB-C connector or an adapter.
- The speed of the cards. Fast cards, such as UHS-II, reach their full speed only in a reader that also supports UHS-II.
- The casing. Small readers with a direct USB connector can be carried on a keychain, while models with a cable are more convenient when the port is at the back of the computer. A metal casing is more durable for frequent carrying.
- External or internal. Internal readers are mounted in a 3.5-inch slot in the case and are always at hand. External ones are portable and work with any computer and laptop.
What to watch out for
- Do not remove the card until the copying is complete – this can damage the files.
- If the reader does not see a large card, check if it supports SDXC.
- Smart card readers are for electronic signatures and ID cards and require software from the publisher.
- For multiple cards at once, docking stations with several slots save time.
- Keep the contacts of the cards clean and store them in a case to avoid damage in your pocket or bag.
Compatibility
Most readers work with Windows, macOS, and Linux without additional drivers, and models with USB-C also work with many phones and tablets. This way you can transfer photos from the camera directly to the phone and share them immediately. If the computer has no free port, use a USB hub – some hubs also have a built-in card reader. For storing large files that you transfer, check out external hard drive enclosures.
