Useful when choosing
The motherboard connects all parts of the computer and determines what processor, memory, and future upgrades you can use. Here you will find models from ASUS, Gigabyte, ASRock, MSI, and others – for AMD and Intel, from compact boards for small cases to models for powerful workstations.
How to choose
- The socket and chipset. The socket must match the processor, while the chipset determines the capabilities. Boards with A and H chipsets are for basic systems, B is the best balance for most people, while X and Z provide more lanes, ports, and overclocking options.
- The memory. Each board works with only one type of memory – DDR4 or DDR5. New platforms only support DDR5. Also, check the number of slots: four slots provide room for expansion.
- The size (form factor). ATX is the standard with the most slots. Micro ATX is smaller and often more cost-effective. Mini ITX is for compact cases, but with two memory slots and one for expansion.
- The expansions. The slot for the graphics card is PCIe x16, and new boards have PCIe 5.0 for a graphics card or fast M.2 drive. If you are going to install a sound, network, or capture card, check how many additional slots remain free.
- The connections. Built-in Wi-Fi 6, 6E, or 7 and Bluetooth save a separate card. The number of M.2 slots indicates how many fast SSDs you will install.
What to watch out for
- Older boards may require a BIOS update to recognize a new processor.
- Powerful processors require a board with solid power delivery to the processor and cooling around it.
- Check how many USB ports, including USB-C, are available on the back and whether there is a USB-C connector on the front panel of the case.
- The network card on the board is 1 Gbit, 2.5 Gbit, or faster – this matters for fast internet or a home server.
- The number of connectors for fans and RGB is important if you plan to install many fans or lighting.
- On some boards, certain SATA ports are disabled when you occupy specific M.2 slots.
Compatibility
First, choose a processor, then a board with the same socket and suitable chipset. After that, get memory of the type that the board supports, and a case for its size. The Configurator automatically checks these connections and shows only the parts that fit.
