Useful when choosing
The e-reader gathers an entire library in a device lighter than a book, and the e-ink screen reads like paper, even in direct sunlight. It is great for traveling, for evening reading, and for anyone who reads a lot and wants to have all their books at hand. Here you will find readers from Amazon Kindle, PocketBook, Bookeen, and other brands, writing tablets with a stylus, as well as cases for readers.
How to choose
- Screen size. 6 and 7 inches are the most popular – the reader is lightweight and can be held with one hand. Larger screens from 7.8 to 10 inches are more comfortable for PDF documents, textbooks, and comics.
- Resolution. Higher pixel density makes the text sharper and closer to a printed page.
- Backlight. The built-in backlight allows reading in the dark. The adjustable light temperature makes it warmer in the evening, for easier falling asleep.
- Memory. Even 8 GB can hold thousands of books. More memory is useful if you read comics, PDF files, or listen to audiobooks.
- Water resistance. Models with IPX8 protection are suitable for reading in the bath and at the beach.
- Writing. Readers and tablets with a stylus allow notes in books and handwritten notes, almost like in a notebook.
What to watch out for
- Check which formats the reader supports, such as EPUB, PDF, and MOBI.
- Some readers are linked to a specific online bookstore – check how to load your own files.
- The case protects the screen from pressure and scratches, especially in a bag. Cases with magnets wake the reader when opened.
- Physical page-turn buttons are convenient when reading with one hand.
- Color e-ink screens are paler than tablets, but are suitable for comics and diagrams.
Compatibility
Most readers connect to a computer via USB cable and with Wi-Fi for downloading books, and some also with Bluetooth for audiobooks. If you are looking for a more versatile device for video, games, and apps, check out phones and tablets. To listen to audiobooks, add wireless headphones.
