Useful when choosing
The portable console allows you to play anywhere – on the couch, while traveling, or during breaks. Here you will find consoles with Nintendo, portable gaming laptops with Windows or SteamOS that run games from the computer, and models with Android for games from the phone and the cloud.
How to choose
- Operating system. Nintendo is a closed platform with its own games. Windows consoles run almost any computer game from various stores. SteamOS is optimized for games from Steam and is easy to use. Android consoles are for mobile games, emulators, and cloud gaming.
- The screen. A larger screen with higher resolution and refresh rate provides a clearer and smoother picture. OLED displays have better contrast and vibrant colors.
- Memory. Computer games take up a lot of space. Larger built-in memory or a slot for a card or SSD allows you to carry more games.
- RAM and processor. For Windows consoles, more RAM and a more powerful processor mean more frames in demanding games.
- The battery. Heavy games drain the battery faster, so check the capacity and the ability to charge via USB-C.
- Controls. Some models have detachable controllers, others have touchpads and rear buttons for games designed for a mouse. Try which shape feels comfortable in your hands during long gaming sessions.
What to watch out for
- Not all computer games work well on a small screen and with a controller – check their support.
- Weight matters during long gaming sessions in hand.
- The charger with USB-C and Power Delivery allows charging from an external battery.
- The case and protective glass protect the console during transport.
- Check if the package includes a charger – some models are sold without one.
Connecting to a TV
Many portable consoles connect to a TV or monitor via a docking station or USB-C and become a home console. This way you can play on a large screen with a gamepad, and then continue outside. If you want a classic home console, check out PlayStation and Xbox consoles, and for VR games – VR glasses. The portable console is also a suitable gift for people who travel often.
