Useful when choosing
The power strip looks ordinary, but the safety of the computer, monitor, and everything around the desk depends on it. Here you can find power strips with a button and surge protection, models with USB ports for charging, extension cords on a reel, and protected cables for outdoor use.
How to choose
- Number of sockets. Calculate how many devices you are plugging in – computer, monitor, speakers, chargers, lamp – and get at least one socket more. Three sockets are enough for a small desk, while five and six are more convenient for a full workstation.
- Surge protection. Power strips with protection absorb power surges during storms or network issues and protect the equipment. For a computer and television, this is a sensible investment.
- Power rating. The total power of the connected devices should not exceed the maximum power of the power strip. Heaters and kettles are better off in a separate outlet.
- The button. The power button turns off power to all devices at once – it saves energy in standby mode and conveniently turns off the entire desk.
- USB ports. Built-in USB outputs charge phones and headphones without a separate charger.
What to watch out for
- Do not plug a power strip into another power strip – this easily overloads the circuit.
- Child protection closes the sockets when there is no plug in them.
- For outdoor use, choose extension cords with moisture protection and suitable cables.
- Fully unwind the reel extension cord under larger loads to prevent overheating.
- The length of the cable should reach the outlet without stretching.
- The light indicator shows whether there is power and whether the protection is active.
Safety
Power strips with Schuko sockets are the standard in Bulgaria and accept most plugs, including flat Euro plugs from chargers. Surge protection helps with brief power surges but does not replace UPS during power outages – if you work with important files or have a NAS, combine the two. Arrange the cables so that they do not run under the desk or under carpets. A power strip with mounting holes can be secured under the tabletop – this way, the sockets are within reach, and the cables do not lie on the floor. Replace the power strip if it has darkened, cracked, or is heating up. For charging phones and tablets, also check the chargers.
