Useful when choosing
The server motherboard connects the processors, memory, disks, and network and determines how much the system can grow. Its choice is a decision for years to come, so it's good to leave room for more memory, disks, and cards. Here you will find motherboards from Supermicro and ASRock for AMD EPYC and Intel Xeon processors – with many memory slots, fast network ports, and remote management.
How to choose
- The socket. The motherboard determines which processors you can use – for example, SP5 for AMD EPYC or older sockets like LGA 3647 for previous generations of Intel Xeon. There are also motherboards for two processors for maximum power.
- The memory. The number of slots – 8, 12, or 24 – and the supported generation DDR4 or DDR5 determine the maximum memory capacity. Server motherboards require registered ECC memory.
- The expansion slots. Check the number of PCI Express slots and their generation for network cards, video cards, and disk controllers.
- The disks. Look at the number of M.2 slots, SATA ports, and connectors for NVMe disks, as well as RAID support.
- The network and management. The built-in 10-gigabit ports and remote management (IPMI or BMC) allow for fast networking and control of the server from a distance, including system installation.
- The form factor. ATX motherboards fit into larger cases and chassis, while non-standard size motherboards require a compatible chassis from the manufacturer.
What to watch out for
- Check the list of supported processors and memory on the manufacturer's website.
- Update the BIOS and BMC firmware before installing the operating system.
- Server motherboards do not have built-in Wi-Fi and sound – they are not needed in a server.
- Cooling for the processors and chipset requires good airflow in the chassis.
- Change the default password for the remote management system immediately after installation.
Compatibility and consultation
You will need server processors and ECC memory from the same platform, as well as a suitable chassis for the motherboard. If you are looking for a motherboard for a specific project, contact us – we will help with the selection of compatible components and clarify availability.
