The network is often the bottleneck of the server – backups, shared files, and virtual machines move as fast as the connection allows. Here you can find server network cards from Intel and Broadcom with 10-gigabit ports, as well as managed switches from TP-Link with PoE and SFP+ ports for office and server rooms.
How to choose
- Speed. Gigabit networks are sufficient for a small office and internet. 10-gigabit cards and ports accelerate the copying of large files, backups, and access to storage significantly.
- Type of port. RJ45 ports work with standard network cables of category 6A and higher for 10 Gbps. SFP+ ports use optical modules or direct copper cables and are more energy-efficient and cooler.
- Number of ports. Cards with two ports allow link aggregation for higher speed or redundancy in case of cable or port failure.
- Switch. Managed switches allow VLAN networks, traffic prioritization, and monitoring. PoE ports power cameras, access points, and phones over the network cable.
- Card slot. Check the generation and number of PCI Express lanes required by the card, and whether there is a free slot in the server.
What to watch out for
- For 10 Gbps over copper, you need quality cable – older cables often cannot maintain this speed.
- SFP+ modules must be compatible with the switch and card – some manufacturers only allow their own modules.
- Check the total PoE power of the switch if you will be powering many devices.
- Drivers for network cards must support the operating system or hypervisor.
- Aggregate the server ports to two different switches if you want redundancy in case of failure.
- Keep a diagram of the network and label the cables – this saves hours in case of a problem.
Compatibility and consultation
Network cards are installed in a free slot on the server motherboard. For fast data access, also check server storage. If you are building a network for an office or server room, contact us – we will help you choose cards, switches, and cables.
