Useful when choosing
Server processors operate 24/7 and generate a lot of heat, and the cooler must reliably dissipate it in the tight server chassis. Here, coolers for server sockets like SP5 and LGA 4710 are collected, as well as for smaller server platforms – passive radiators for chassis with strong airflow and active coolers with fans for tower-type servers.
How to choose
- The socket. The cooler must be for the processor socket and the mounting method of the board. Server sockets have their own sizes and are not compatible with desktop coolers.
- Height. In a 1U chassis, there is only room for a low radiator. In 2U and tower servers, taller radiators with better cooling can be installed.
- Passive or active. Passive radiators have no fan and rely on the chassis fans. Active coolers have their own fan and are suitable for towers and workstations.
- Processor power. The cooler must handle the thermal power (TDP) of the processor with a margin, especially for multi-core models.
- Airflow direction. In servers, air flows from front to back. The fins of the radiator should be arranged in the direction of the airflow.
What to watch out for
- Use appropriate thermal paste and follow the order for tightening screws during installation.
- A passive radiator in a regular case without strong airflow will overheat.
- For dual-processor boards, check the distance between the sockets and whether the coolers fit next to each other.
- Regularly clean dust from the radiators and fans of the chassis.
- Monitor temperatures in the server management system – that’s where cooling problems are seen first.
- Do not leave empty slots without blanks – they disrupt the airflow direction.
Compatibility and consultation
The cooler is chosen together with the processor and chassis, as both determine its size and type. If you cannot find a cooler for your socket and chassis, contact us with the model of the board and chassis – we will check compatible models and possible delivery.
