Useful when choosing
The server processor determines how many virtual machines, users, and tasks the system can handle simultaneously. It is chosen together with the motherboard and memory, as these three parts define the server's capabilities for years to come. Here you can find Intel Xeon and AMD EPYC processors – from models with few cores and high frequency for small servers to multi-core processors for virtualization and computing. Server processors are usually sold in industrial packaging (tray), without a cooler.
How to choose
- The number of cores. More cores mean more simultaneous tasks and virtual machines. A few cores are sufficient for a file server, while for virtualization and databases – 16, 32, and more.
- The frequency. Some applications and software licenses are charged per core, so for them, processors with fewer but faster cores are more advantageous.
- The socket and platform. The processor must match the socket of the motherboard – for example, SP5 for AMD EPYC or LGA 4710 for the new Intel Xeon. Smaller servers can use processors with LGA 1700 socket.
- Memory and PCI Express lanes. Server processors support more memory channels and more PCIe lanes, which is important for many drives, network cards, and graphics cards.
- Power consumption (TDP). More powerful processors generate more heat – the cooling and power supply of the chassis must be appropriate.
What to watch out for
- The processor in tray packaging does not include a cooler – it is selected according to the chassis.
- Check the motherboard manufacturer's list to see if the processor is supported and from which BIOS version.
- Server processors usually do not have integrated graphics – the motherboard has its own video controller for management.
- In dual-processor motherboards, both processors must be identical.
- Licenses for some server systems and applications are calculated per core – take this into account when choosing.
Compatibility and consultation
For the processor, you will need a compatible server motherboard and ECC memory. If you cannot find the processor you need, contact us – the availability of server components is confirmed upon inquiry, and we can suggest suitable alternatives.
