Useful when choosing
The smart plug turns a regular device into one that can be controlled by your phone – you can turn a lamp, boiler, stove, or charger on and off remotely, on a schedule, or with voice commands. Here you can find smart plugs and kits from TP-Link, HAMA, D-Link, Edimax, Amazon, and others that work with Google Assistant and Alexa.
How to choose
- Maximum power. Check how many watts or amps the plug can handle. A model with 10 A is suitable for lamps and small devices, while for a boiler, radiator, or washing machine, choose a plug with 16 A and around 3600 W.
- Measuring consumption. Some plugs show how much energy the device consumes. This way, you can find out which devices are racking up the electricity bill.
- The app and assistants. Check which app controls the plug and whether it works with Google Assistant or Alexa if you already use such a home.
- The connection. Most plugs connect directly to the Wi-Fi router at 2.4 GHz and do not require a separate hub.
- Indoors or outdoors. For terraces and yards, models for outdoor use with protection against water and dust are needed.
What to watch out for
- Do not overload the plug beyond the stated power – this is a matter of safety.
- Check the type of plug – the standard Schuko plug is used in Bulgaria.
- The device should start automatically when power is supplied – for devices with a power button, the plug only provides power.
- Mini models take up less space and do not block the neighboring plug in the power strip.
- With a weak Wi-Fi signal, the plug may lose connection – check the coverage in the area.
Compatibility
Smart plugs work with Android and iOS phones through the manufacturer's app, and many models also with voice assistants. In the app, you can group several plugs by rooms and create scenarios, such as turning everything off when you leave. If you want to control your home with your voice, check out the smart speakers in the portable speakers category. For better Wi-Fi coverage throughout the house, a good router or extender from the networking equipment category helps.
