Description
ASUS DSL-N55U is a wireless N router with a built-in ADSL modem, aimed at home users and small offices who want one device for internet, Wi-Fi, and resource sharing. It supports Wi-Fi N standard with 802.11n speeds of up to 600Mbps and an integrated xDSL modem with ADSL2/2+ up to 24Mbps downstream. It has three external antennas and wide support for wireless standards, making it a flexible base for both old and new hardware. The plus is that it combines a router, ADSL modem, print server, 3G/4G fallback, and Samba server in one chassis.
What you get
With this router, you can directly connect your ADSL/DSL line through the RJ11 port and distribute internet to up to four devices via LAN through 4 x RJ45 ports. Support for 802.11a/b/g/n gives you compatibility with older devices, while 802.11n up to 600Mbps provides solid capacity for HD streaming, online gaming, and cloud services in a typical home. The two USB 2.0 ports allow you to connect a printer (print server), external disk (Samba server), or 3G/4G USB dongle for backup internet. The built-in firewall functions, WPA/WPA2 protection, and QoS give you control over security and traffic prioritization – for example, to prioritize VoIP or gaming traffic over torrents.
- Support for Wi-Fi N (802.11n up to 600Mbps), which is more than enough for everyday web, streaming, and online gaming in a standard household.
- Integrated xDSL modem (ADSL/ADSL2/2+ up to 24Mbps downstream), so you don't need a separate modem from the provider for the DSL line.
- 3 x external, detachable antennas, which help for better coverage and give you the option to replace them with a higher dBi model if needed.
- 4 x RJ45 LAN ports (10/100/Gigabits BaseT according to the interface specification), so you can connect several desktop PCs, consoles, or smart TVs via cable for lower ping.
- 2 x USB 2.0 ports with support for Samba Server, Print server, and 3G/4G via USB dongle, turning the router into a small home file/print server with an option for mobile internet backup.
- Advanced security features: 64/128-bit WEP, WPA/WPA2-PSK, WPA/WPA2-Enterprise, 802.1x Radius, NAT and SPI firewall, plus filters by port, IP, URL, and MAC for finer control.
- VPN capabilities with IPSec, PPTP, L2TP Pass-Through and PPTP server, which is convenient for remote access to the home or small office network.
- Support for QoS, to manage traffic priority and reduce lag during gaming or video calls when the network is busy.
- Compatibility with multiple network standards – IEEE 802.11a/b/g/n/d, 802.11i, 802.11e, 802.3, 802.3u, IPv4 and IPv6 – making it flexible for older and newer environments.
Who it is suitable for
DSL-N55U is a good choice if you are on ADSL/DSL internet and want an “all-in-one” box: modem, Wi-Fi router, USB sharing, and basic VPN in one device. It is suitable for small apartments or offices with several users who use web, video, light gaming, and online services. If you are looking for gigabit LAN infrastructure for heavy local transfers or multi-room coverage with mesh, this is not the right tool.
The most sensible thing about this model is the combination of built-in xDSL modem, stable Wi-Fi N, two USB ports with Samba/Print/3G/4G, and a serious package for security and VPN – essentially everything basic for a compact home or SOHO network.
