Useful when choosing
If you are assembling your own server or expanding an existing one, here you will find the main server-class components – Intel Xeon and AMD EPYC processors, error-correcting memory, motherboards from Supermicro and ASRock, server SSDs from Samsung and Micron, network cards and switches, chassis, and graphics cards for computing. The components are categorized by type:
- Server processors and server motherboards – the foundation of the system.
- Server ECC memory and server storage – for reliable data handling.
- Server networks, chassis, power supplies, coolers, and graphics cards.
How to choose
- Start with the platform. First choose the processor and socket, then a compatible motherboard. Server sockets, like SP5 and LGA 4710, are not compatible with desktop ones.
- The memory. Server motherboards usually require registered ECC memory (RDIMM) from the generation they support – DDR4 or DDR5.
- The drives. Server SSDs have higher write endurance and protection against power loss. The formats are M.2, 2.5 inches, and U.2.
- The network. 10-gigabit network cards and switches with SFP+ accelerate backups and file access.
- The chassis and power supply. The chassis must accommodate the motherboard, drives, and cards and provide strong airflow. Server power supplies are often hot-swappable and can be two for redundancy.
- The graphics cards. For AI, rendering, and computing, professional cards with large memory are used, designed for server chassis.
What to watch out for
- Check the list of supported memory and processors on the motherboard manufacturer's website.
- Server processors are usually sold without a cooler – it is chosen according to the chassis.
- Motherboards with non-standard sizes require a compatible chassis.
- Powerful components require power supplies and cooling designed for 24/7 operation.
- Update the BIOS and firmware of the motherboard before installing the operating system.
