Top 10 Most Significant Nvidia GPUs of All Time
 

Founded in 1993, Nvidia is a young player compared to other semiconductor companies. However, its impact on the technology world is enormous. According to Steam's hardware survey, over 80% of users have an Nvidia graphics card in their gaming system, while Passmark states that over 60% of users have an Nvidia product.
The company's first chip in 1995, NV1, appeared to be a brilliant product offering video and 3D acceleration, an integrated sound card, and a gamepad port, relying on square texture mapping instead of triangle rendering on polygons. This means that Nvidia kicked off directly with its big debut. The lesson learned in subsequent chips includes some sure hits.

10. Nvidia RIVA 128

Short for Real-time Interactive Video and Animation accelerator, RIVA 128 is the successor to NV1 and a product that caught everyone's eye. Offering support for DirectX 5 and OpenGL, RIVA 128 does not repeat the mistakes of its predecessor. Looking as if it came from the future, it impresses from the very start with 4 MB SGRAM support and AGP 2X. At that time, it was on par with the 3Dfx Voodoo cards, which were the fastest graphics processors on the market. Over a million units were sold in the first 4 months of RIVA 128's release, making the card one of NVIDIA's most significant breakthroughs.

The successor to RIVA 128, TNT is a really good card, but it can no longer compete with 3Dfx. The surprise comes when Nvidia releases its TNT2 the following year with several significant improvements. A process shrunk to 250 nm (later down to 220 nm with TNT2 Pro) allows for higher clock speeds (125 MHz on the core and 150 MHz in memory – compared to 90/110 in the original TNT), while the chip supports larger textures, a 32-bit Z-buffer, AGP 4X, and a maximum of 32 MB of memory. Compared to competing products from 3Dfx, TNT2 offers better support for DirectX and OpenGL and excellent image quality with 32-bit color. This is the card that gamers notice.

In 1999, Nvidia introduced the first GeForce chip, known as GeForce 256. The card has two variants, with the high-end DDR model garnering most of the attention due to its fast memory. GeForce 256 also includes transformation and lighting (T&L), which allows the chip to handle calculations previously covered by the processor. This feature enables the card to work in combination even with a slower processor while still providing excellent performance. Although critics and competitors claim that the technology is unnecessary, it ultimately becomes standard and is found in almost every graphics card on the market. GeForce 256 also serves as the basis for the first Quadro product with computer-aided design. This product line opens up an entirely new and lucrative market for Nvidia.

After the year 2000, ATI and Nvidia have a fierce battle against each other, outdoing one another. The eras of GeForce 2, 3, and 4 come. After ATI releases its Radeon 9700 and impresses everyone, Nvidia bursts onto the market with a bang with GeForce 6800. It is also one of the first products to use GDDR3 memory. GeForce 6800 is a speed demonstration, even beating ATI's X800 XT with better support for shader models and 32-bit floating-point precision compared to Radeon. Additionally, as Nvidia acquires 3Dfx, they begin to implement features and technologies from the former graphics company. A key part of 3Dfx's portfolio is Scan-Line Interleave, which connects two graphics cards and increases the available power for 3D processing. In 2004, Nvidia modernizes this feature and reintroduces it as Scalable Link Interface (SLI) with many enthusiasts pairing 6800 series cards in an attempt to create the ultimate gaming computer.

Two years after GeForce 6800, Nvidia introduces the GeForce 8800 series. The new graphics card is an absolute beast with up to 128 stream processors, 575 MHz on the core, shader clock at 1.35 GHz, and 768 MB GDDR3 memory. This card at that time could surpass a flagship dual graphics processor from the previous generation. It is one of the first products to use a unified shader architecture. The GeForce 8 series is considered fast even years after its initial debut. However, not everything goes smoothly, as a significant number of chips from this series suffer from overheating issues, leading to many dissatisfied customers.

Before the onset of the period after 2010, dual graphics processor boards became a highly sought-after item and AMD competed quite aggressively with their ATI Radeon 4870 x2. To manage to compete, Nvidia introduced the GeForce GTX 295, which places two of its GeForce 200 chips on one board. With the right drivers, this is the fastest graphics card that money can buy, and at a price of $500, it could outperform a pair of GTX 260, with just one of them at that time having an MSRP of $450, making the card a good deal for enthusiasts.

The fully unleashed Fermi architecture comes with 16 streaming multiprocessor clusters, six active 64-bit memory controllers, and full-speed FP16 filtering. With AMD chasing Nvidia closely, the GTX 580 had to be everything the GTX 480 failed to be, and fortunately, the card managed to hold AMD at bay for a while. The dual high-end graphics processor, the GTX 590, was met with scathing reviews due to poor stability and the inability to outpace the Radeon HD 6990. Which at this point was undesirable for the company and motivated it to work harder to catch up with the competitor.

Nvidia produces products for PC enthusiasts, professional designers, and even supercomputers and AI researchers, but with Tegra SoCs, they effectively jump into the world of mobile consoles. The Arm-based Tegra range is designed for smartphones and tablets, but things go beyond that, and the additional processing power of the SoC becomes an integral part of the Nintendo Switch. The success of the Switch is unusual – nearly 70 million units were sold by 2017. Each is equipped with a Tegra X1, which pairs an ARMv8 ARM Cortex-A57 quad-core with a 256-core graphics processor based on Maxwell.
Needless to say, this is one of Nvidia's most successful developments.

The 16-nanometer GeForce GTX 1080 series is extremely impactful and a major milestone for the graphics processor manufacturer, showcasing the power and expertise of Nvidia. The Pascal architecture significantly outpaces the competition to such an extent that the GeForce GTX 10 cards remain the best on the market and a huge problem for AMD for several years, which is almost an anomaly in the graphics market. The GTX 1080 becomes the benchmark for victory, and even the next generation of Nvidia graphics processors struggles to show significant improvement in raster performance. The fast GDDR5X memory is combined with 2560 CUDA cores in the GTX 1080 and 3584 cores in the GTX 1080 Ti, leading to impressive frame rates, even when increasing the resolution.
Needless to say, the 1080 Ti is the card that practically doomed the potential success of the RTX 20 series, and it is no coincidence that at the launch of the RTX 30 series cards, the flagship 3090 was compared to the 1080 Ti, not to a card from the RTX 20 series.

The GTX 1080 is followed by the Turing-powered RTX 20 series, which for the first time implements hardware real-time ray tracing (RTX) in a consumer-oriented graphics card. However, at the time of the launch of the cards, there were very few games with RTX enabled, and overall the RTX 20 series did not prove to be a significant leap over Pascal. Nvidia improves the situation with the RTX 30 series, which uses the Ampere architecture. This makes the RTX 3080 the best gaming card even with RTX enabled with DLSS. It has 28.3 billion transistors and 8704 cores with a clock speed of up to 1.7 GHz, providing a massive 70% performance jump over the RTX 2080 at 4K, which is impressive. The less positive side is that the card has only 10 GB of memory, although it is faster - GDDR6X. It is definitely power-hungry, if I may say so, and despite its high MSRP of $700, the RTX 3080 can be considered a good deal for enthusiasts and gamers due to its low price per frame. Unfortunately, however, at the time of publication of this article, the situation with the availability and prices of Ampere cards is horrific. It is extremely difficult for gamers to acquire the much-desired flagship, and when they finally find an available unit, they are met with a much higher price compared to the initially announced by Nvidia. The reasons for this situation are complex - pandemic, shortages of critical components like PWM controllers and memory, production and logistics difficulties, and not least the boom in cryptocurrency mining.

What to expect from the Green Giant in the future? Only time will tell! 
In conclusion, we can only say that Nvidia has become a dominator in the graphics industry, not only by continuously presenting impressive and innovative products for computer and console gamers and enthusiasts. Recently, the company has been offering solutions for automotive manufacturers, creative studios, and researchers, not to mention the upcoming acquisition of ARM. Nowadays, Nvidia equips its hardware products with RTX (Ray Tracing), which allows photorealistic lighting and stunning graphics for a truly perfect gaming experience. However, even without this feature, their graphics processors are among the best-performing in the industry. As we stand on the brink of a new generation of games and consoles with RTX support, it will be interesting to see if Nvidia can extend its lead over the competition.
