
More than 2 years have passed since Nvidia introduced its Deep Learning Super Sampling (DLSS) technology. Initially, people were dissatisfied with the fact that enabling DLSS made games quite blurry and smeared, but its second revision significantly improved image quality. At this stage, many gamers prefer to use DLSS to boost their gaming performance at the expense of an imperceptible difference in quality. Some games, like CyberPunk 2077, are nearly unplayable at 4K resolution with ray tracing enabled if DLSS is not used.
During the presentation of the RX 6000 series, AMD promised that it would release its version of the technology. The company has not shown any details regarding the principle of operation or when exactly it will be available. The reds only hinted that it might be based on Microsoft DirectML, but also revealed that it would be part of the FidelityFX package. At this moment, it is still unclear whether AMD plans to stick to DirectML and steer the gaming market towards this standard or will create its own implementation that will require collaboration with game developers, similar to Nvidia. According to Prohardver, AMD plans to release its major driver update sometime this spring. This means that at the earliest, we might hear more about FFSS in March. According to the information, it will initially include two of the technologies related to resolution, namely FidelityFX SR and Radeon Boost.
AMD Radeon Boost does not use machine learning algorithms to increase frames per second. Instead, the technology dynamically adjusts the resolution during high-speed gameplay. This means that when there is a lot of movement on the screen, the resolution will automatically adjust to improve performance, which is a relatively easy way to increase frames but can lead to inconsistent performance during gameplay.
It is claimed that the new implementation of Radeon Boost, which we expect with the driver update, will offer better image quality by dynamically adjusting the resolution only on fast-moving elements on the screen. In comparison, the current version of the software processes the entire frame. For example, this would solve the problem of lower resolution of weapons in first-person games during fast gameplay.
Sapphire developed an alternative version called TriXX Boost. Unlike Radeon Boost, here the resolution does not change dynamically. Instead, the application creates a personal resolution for the system and uses Radeon Image Sharpening technology to enhance image quality. This allows for more consistent performance at the cost of lower quality, which is subsequently improved by sharpening filters instead of an AI algorithm.
If AMD indeed plans its driver updates, we will surely hear more information soon.
