DirectSR from Microsoft is here, combining DLSS, FSR, and XeSS into a single API for game developers

The DirectSR (Direct Super Resolution) technology for DirectX makes it easier for developers to add DLSS, FSR and XeSS to their games and is now available.

Microsoft announced that DirectSR is now available through the Agility SDK 1.714.0-preview version for game developers working with DirectX 12. The company partnered with AMD, Intel and NVIDIA to create this new API (application programming interface), which allows developers to integrate all the different resolution scaling technologies into their games.

Nvidia DLSS Super Resolution

This includes AMD FidelityFX Super Resolution (FSR), Intel XeSS, and NVIDIA DLSS Super Resolution. "These modern solutions enhance the gaming experience by increasing frames per second while maintaining exceptional visual quality," writes Joshua Tucker from Microsoft in the announcement. “But with the increasing number of resolution upscaling options, developers are looking for a common super resolution API that works seamlessly with the entire hardware ecosystem.”

AMD FSR

DirectSR reduces resolution upscaling to a common set of inputs and outputs, allowing a "single code path" to connect directly to DLSS, FSR, and XeSS. With DirectSR, more PC games will support all three technologies at launch. This is a standalone solution that does not require "vendor-specific SDKs" (software development kits) or additional tools.

Intel XeSS

Support for DirectSR will be part of the drivers for all graphics cards, with availability for GeForce RTX owners in the upcoming NVIDIA 560.38 GeForce Game Ready Driver.

Here are a few quotes from AMD, Intel, and NVIDIA praising DirectSR:

"It has been a pleasure to collaborate with Microsoft in designing and developing DirectSR as a way to unify developers' access to super resolution technologies across all platforms. We are pleased to announce that AMD FSR 2.2 is implemented as a built-in implementation in DirectSR as part of this preview version."

Andrey Zdravkovich, Senior Vice President of GPU Technologies and Software Engineering, and Chief Software Director at AMD

"Intel strongly supports the DirectSR specification and the collaborative efforts put into its creation - it makes life easier for game developers and ensures that more gamers can leverage the Intel XeSS resolution upscaling technology on Intel graphics cards."

Alexander Harlamov, Senior Director, Intel GPU Rendering

"NVIDIA DLSS Super Resolution is available in over 400 titles and has become a standard feature for gamers. We are excited to give developers even more ways to implement DLSS in the next generation of games."

Jason Paul, Vice President, GeForce Platform Marketing at NVIDIA
